March 2010 - mini projects

At times I like to challenge myself and see if a new product can bring forth the bacon. Especially if a new web app proves useful to me on a personal use level, imagine what fruits it can bear for paid work productivity. Unlimited potential.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Project 1: Uploading photographs from iPhone to SME storage and see if it would sync to Skydrive in 1 hour.

Aim: upload photographs to iPhone Photos folder in Skydrive. Skydrive has 25GB you can store a great deal of photographs and sync it back down to your computer later.

Signed up to Skydrive and SME storage both offer free account. You have to sign up SME storage, Skydrive doesn't have its own app compared to Dropbox. So far if you upload images via the web to SME storage in return it synchronises to Skydrive. However, when you try in SME storage iPhone app, it halts at SME storage server and fail to move into Skydrive. Despite days later I have no good result. I have emailed the support team and to say the least they originally had doubts then later stated a new build of the app would solve it, once Apple approves the update.

3 May 2010 - Test concluded

SME storage team's app update has been approved by Apple and it is now working well. Now Skydrive is becoming more of a useful cloud service on my iPhone. I am proud to say this app has potentials.

Project 2: Get Skydrive photo albums to show up as mini slideshow in Blogger gadgets

Aim: Save people the hassle of visiting each photo albums, 1 by 1 in a new window, rather just give them thumb size overview of photo alum.

For individual photograph embedded my blog it looked smaller than I expected but I will adjust the size in days to come. You can add a direct link to the photo album but Blogger gadget doesn't pick up Skydrive photo albums. Therefore hard to say if the problems lies with Skydrive or Blogger. This problem also occurs with Flickr, Blogger gadget cannot pick up the photo album rss feed. Perhaps it requires sliver light plug in.

Project 3: Create epub file with Stanza desktop and retrieve it from Skydrive.

Aim: create my own epub and view them on Stanza iPhone app. Stanza can pause and bookmark various text you are reading, even when jumping between titles, imagine when you do that with your epubs.

3 May 2010 - Test concluded

I have downloaded Stanza desktop application and begin churning pdf into epubs then upload them to Skydrive. However, Stanza iPhone app cannot fetch from Skydrive. Instead it kept stating no data and at times cannot login. Ugh. I give up and await this Window Live app which is said to be in the works by Microsoft.
